“For You and You alone
Awake my soul, awake my soul and sing
For the world You love
Your will be done, let Your will be done in me”

Fifteen years ago, Louie Giglio and Jeff Lewis had a vision to bring a spiritual awakening to the upcoming generation through prayer and worship. This vision came to be known simply as Passion. And from this vision, an annual conference, that has sprung some of the greatest worship leaders of our time: David Crowder, Chris Tomlin, Charlie Hall, Steve Fee, Matt Redman, and Christy Nockels. Each year, an album is recorded the captures the heart and message of that year’s conference. In 2010, the conference was held in Atlanta, Georgia with over 22,000 college-age students in attendance. The album is titled, “Awakening”, and is arguably the most complete and heart-felt worship album composed by Passion yet.

The first song is the title song, “Awakening” sung by Chris Tomlin. Although this song isn’t quite as popular as many of the other ones found on the album, it’s one of my personal favorites. It’s a cry for God to bring revival in one’s life and is very timely for this current generation. It’s not your typical fast-paced opener, but seems to fit well leading off. Next is “Say, Say” by Kristian Standfill. Lyrically this song is fairly weak, but it does provide some upbeat energy after a mid-tempo opening. Overall, though, I’ve heard much worse from Standfill.

The next two songs are the most popular worship songs off the album that are now being sung in congregations across the nation and world today: “Our God” by Chris Tomlin and “How He Loves” by the David Crowder Band. Although these songs have been done on other albums, their best versions are found here. “Our God” is a song that declares God’s greatness and majesty in a simple, yet profound way. “How He Loves” has become one of the most beloved worship songs of the past few years. The power and energy are truly felt here more than the studio version and you wouldn’t be able to stop yourself from turning up the volume to full blast!

The middle of the album is what you would come to expect: slower worship ballads. What I like about these songs is that they don’t drag and are in the four to five minute range. The two songs sung by Christy Nockels: “Healing in is Your Hands” and “Where the Spirit of the Lord is” are the best of the group here. The latter is a duet between Nockels and Tomlin and is a powerful song that reminds us of the liberty we find in the grace of God.

The album picks up again with “Rise and Sing” by Fee, which is easily the best of fast-paced tracks here. David Crowder’s “other” song on the album: “Like a Lion”, has the strongest and most profound lyrics I’ve heard in quite some time that again address the cry for revival in our land: “Let love explode and bring the dead to life…our God’s not dead, He’s surely alive. He’s living on the inside roaring like a Lion!” The simple guitar riff that flows throughout really makes this worship song stand out.

“Chosen Generation” by Chris Tomlin follows and doesn’t quite live up its processors. It isn’t a bad song, though, and fits well with the overall theme of revival and spiritual awakening on the album. If you were expecting a slow, mid-tempo worship ballad to wrap up this album–you wouldn’t find it here. “With Everything” sung by Hillsong United concludes “Awakening” with such raw power, emotion, and intensity that you’ll literally be gasping for air when it wraps up! In my opinion, “With Everything”, is one of the best worship songs of this generation–hands down!

In conclusion, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more influential worship album over the last ten years on worship music than “Awakening.” The message that resonates throughout is also a desperate cry for revival that cannot be simply ignored in light of where we are currently as a nation and church today. The only criticism I have of this album is the flow isn’t quite as good as it could be. The transitions feel forced and are a little out of place at times. Understandably this is the case sometimes with live worship albums in an effort to condense and put together a complete album under 90 minutes. This being said, “Awakening” in my opinion is the best Passion album to date and worth listening to over and over again–truly a gem! Note: the deluxe version includes: “Jesus Messiah”, “The Stand”, and “A Mighty Fortress” which I have not heard (and thus aren’t being reviewed here), but I imagine they’re just more icing of the cake that is this incredible album!

RAW Review rating: 4.5/5

Setting Sight on Scripture Sunday

Sunday, May 20, 2012

“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.” (Revelation 3:15-18)

Lukewarm water is not a pleasant drink to taste. The church in Laodicea had become lukewarm not taking a stand for anything, becoming indifferent, and consumed with their wealth. By neglecting their first love, the church has come hardened and self-satisfied comfortable with their current status. Sadly, the church of Laodicea mirrors much of the American church today. A truth we have forgotten is that our true riches can be found in Christ not in our luxurious buildings and fancy entertainment programs. A revival in the church is needed for us to see again what the body of Christ was meant to be and how to regain it’s vital role in a dying and desperate world.

Twelve Treasured Toys

The Reel

Toy Story is beloved by millions around the world for many reasons. For the beautiful animation and creativity. The art of epic storytelling. The voice acting of the likes of Tim Allen, Tom Hanks, and Wallace Shawn. The humor and the heart. But above all what makes a memorable story? Or in this case a story made up of three epic chapters told over the course of fifteen years? Characters. No made how good a script or the witty lines thrown at us–a story without characters is not worth telling. The audience must care about, emulate, and embrace at bare minimum—the main protagonist. What makes Toy Story so special is that there are an entire family of beloved characters that we have come to know and love. As we begin the final chapter of the Toy Story saga, a few have moved on and are no longer present. There are now twelve remaining toys—Woody, Buzz, the three green aliens, Hamm, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, Slinky Dog, Rex, Jessie, and Bullseye.

These toys are know a close knit family each having special and unique relationships with each other. Each carries a special place in Andy’s heart, only the passage of time has created a crisis among the toys. Their worst fear is now realized. Andy was outgrown them and there’s nothing they can do about it. What now, they ask? What’s the next part of their journey. Uncertainty and panic begin to rise. Their alternative route to the attic isn’t exactly a trip to paradise either. But early on the toys realize that they must stick together despite the very cloudy outlook of their situation.

The Real

In life, we come to know people in many arenas of life. Our flesh and blood family, friends, classmates, neighbors, co-workers, and church family. Only naturally do we come to know and create bonds with some people more than others. But there’s one thing that glues relationships together and separates strangers and those closest to us–friendship. Friendship is the key to an relationship. It may seem trite to state but it’s true. Friendship within the context of love is the greatest gift we can give some else. Toy Story is a beautiful illustration on this essential and eloquent truth.

Strawberry Scented Stench

“So this is it? After all we’ve been through.” Woody

The Reel

When the toys meet Lotso they are immediately taken in by his warm and friendly demeanor. And he smells like strawberries! Sunnyside seemed like the start of something special. Woody, though, is unconvinced and claims that they are “selfish” for not being there for Andy. Jessie and the others have come to the conclusion that Andy doesn’t care about them anymore and it’s over. Who’s right? Well, they’re both right in a sense. In an instant, the family begins to crumble and Woody is out the door.

Their perceived paradise instantly becomes a prison. Lotso isn’t the soft and lovable teddy bear we once were led to believe. He is a bully, liar, and manipulator. We soon learn why Lotso is this way he is in a flashback montage told by Chuckles. He, like Woody, was “special” through the eyes of a child. Daisy was this special child’s name. Daisy took Lotso everywhere and “loved Lotso more than any child could love a toy.” Then one day Lotso, Big Baby, and Chuckles were left behind at a rest stop after Daisy fell asleep and was carried back to her car. After a grueling, long trek back to her house Lotso discovers a horrifying truth. He has been replaced with another Lots O’ Huggin Bear. Chuckles sees the truth along with him, but Big Baby does not. Lotso then snaps and begins his dark descent into the character he becomes in Toy Story 3. He lies to Big Baby telling him that they were all replaced. They end up at Sunnyside and Lotso turns the entire daycare into a prison with a pyramid of command where he’s on top.

Lotso’s worldview is now twisted and warped. Not only does he believe that kids don’t really love toys, but he has forsaken love entirely. He presumably had a strong friendship with both Chuckles and Big Baby. As Chuckles tells us after they arrive at Sunnyside, “But Lotso wasn’t my friend anymore, he wasn’t anyone’s friend.” Chuckles got broke and fortunately Bonnie took him home. Big Baby accepted the lie and was manipulated to do Lotso’s bidding. Now Andy’s toys are imprisoned against their will because as Lotso tells them “so that the Caterpillar kids have toys to play with.” But in reality, Lotso is completely against family and when he sees Andy’s toys, a close knit family, he will stop at nothing but to break it apart.

The Real

We’ve all been hurt from time to time from those we love. With love comes much pain as we come to realize growing up. We say things in the heat of the moment, act out of jealously, are stubborn in our pride, and choose selfishness over sacrifice. Some of these offenses come and go and we’re willing to forgive and forget. But the closer we are to someone, the more pain they can bring us. Like Lotso, we have a choice. To forgive and move on or take vengeance. Let our anger and hurt dictate our attitude and actions. Lotso could have accepted the truth of the matter and embraced the fact that he still had his two best friends with him to support and uplift him through the trails they were about to face. Instead, he choose to let his vengeance overtake him and in the process forsaked friendship altogether. The lesson here is not an easy one to practice. Forgiveness. The deeper the scar, the harder it is to let go. It can be a betrayal of trust. Physical abuse. Being abandoned. The truth of the matter is that without God we cannot forgive someone. To forgive someone does not mean to forget. It means to let go of hurt and pain and hand it over to God. Only He can give us the strength and peace we need. And we need others to give us solid wisdom, encourage us, and comfort us as we battle our emotions.

The War of Worldviews

The Reel

When Woody discovers the horrible truth that Sunnyside is a place of “ruin and despair” he stays true to his character and quickly comes his friends aid. As the leader of this family, he is quick to formulate a plan on how to break his friends out of Sunnyside. He is aided in his knowledge by the “lifer” of the Sunnyside toys–the chatter telephone. They find a way to contain Buzz, get rid of the monkey, and unlock the door. Barbie assists in getting Ken to reveal where Buzz’s owner manual is after a comical sequence of Ken trying on his many outfits. Buzz then goes from “astro-nut” to Spanish Salsa dancer! His feelings for Jessie are bare for all to see as he can’t help but express his true emotions. The toys then elude Big Baby and reach their target. Which happens to be the dumpster. What could go possibly wrong…. right?

Just as we are ready to breathe a sigh of relief, Lotso booms back into the picture. He broke the Chatter telephone both physically and emotionally in order to find out about their plot to escape. What comes next is a war of words or more like worldviews between Lotso and Woody:

Lotso: “I didn’t throw you away. Your kid did. Ain’t one kid ever loved a toy, really. Chew on that when you’re at the dump.”
Woody: “Wait. What about Daisy?”
Lotso: “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Woody: “Daisy? You used to do everything with her?”
Lotso: “Yeah, then she threw us out.”
Woody: “No, she lost you.”
Lotso: “She *replaced* us!”
Woody: “She replaced *you*, and if you couldn’t have her, then no one could! You lied to Big Baby and you’ve been lying ever since!”
Woody: “She loved you, Lotso.”
Lotso: “She never *loved* me!”
Woody: “As much as any kid ever loved a toy.”

Lotso: “WE’RE ALL JUST TRASH WAITIN’ TO BE THROWN AWAY! THAT’S ALL A TOY IS!”

The Real

The enemy wants us to believe, like Lotso came to accept, that God doesn’t love us. That we aren’t worth His attention or concern. That we’re insignificant and have no value. Lotso not only came to accept the lie that kids never loved toys, but in the process lost his identity. Without love, toys had no meaning and were nothing but pieces of plastic destined to be thrown away. This is the worldview apart from Christ we are manipulated to believe. Not there is no God or if He does exist; He is distant from us. We’re all alone. And we have no real purpose, meaning, or significance to our existence. But it’s a bold faced lie. God exists and created each and every one of us to be loved, to love, and to know love. Our faith in this belief will be tested, just as it was for Woody and the toys. God at times may seem distant and uncaring. The question of why we experience pain, heartbreak, injustice, and sorrow can never be completely answered. But we have a choice–to remain loyal and hold fast to His love like Woody or choose indifference that brings despair–like Lotso. This shapes our worldview, our future, and how we live our lives.

Not so with Lotso

“Where is your kid now, sheriff?!” Lotso

The Reel

Big Baby after hearing this, redeems himself, and throws Lotso into the dumpster. The toys are relieved and it appears like they’ll escape the incoming garbage truck. But one of the green aliens is stuck in the dumpster lid and Woody rescues him in the nick of time. But then Woody is pulled into the dumpster with Lotso and all “Hell” begins to break loose. Within a matter of minutes the stakes continue to rise and we are left grasping for breath. This is it—the impending doom every toy fears above all else–they’re headed to the landfill.

Buzz heroically saves Jessie from incoming trash, risking his life, and in the process has his memory restored. They are deposited into the Tri-County landfill. The green aliens run off to investigate an industrial claw and to our horror are swept away. Before we can gather ourselves and think about what may have happened to them, we’re introduced to more danger. A shedder. The toys quickly realize that their escape is via a magnetic conveyor belt. Lotso suddenly appears and is stuck wedged in trash. Woody and Buzz don’t hesitate to come to his aid despite all he has done to them. They have little reason to help him, but do so anyways.

For a complete video footage of Spanish Buzz visit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBEGaCzOE9g&feature=related

Then we see a bright light and at first it’s thought to be daylight. But then the greatest horror is revealed–they are headed straight towards an incinerator. Panic and desperation are now in order. The toys try there hardest to fight the pull towards there impending doom. Lotso notices a button that will shut off the conveyor belt. He’s the only one tall enough to reach the ladder and is assisted by the other toys. He climbs to the top and this is where we are led to believe that Lotso will have a change of heart. He’ll redeem himself…right? A nice happy ending. Wrong. Lotso is fully aware of the situation and chooses to condemn the toys for their belief in love. He taunts, “Where is your kid now, sheriff?!” and walks away. The toys are horrified in disbelief falling into the abyss of fire.

The Real

Another hard and difficult lesson is taught here even if we don’t particularly like it—some people (in this case, toys) can’t be changed. No matter how much we want a person to be redeemed and accept grace–some don’t and choose themselves as god. Also injustices do happen and life is unfair. Did the toys deserve to be rescued from Lotso? Yes. They showed great resolve and loved their greatest enemy. Just as we should love our enemies as ourselves. But it didn’t happen. We, too, face difficult circumstances that are unfair. An unborn child. Being laid off from our job. Being diagnosed with cancer. Being fasely accused. We are faced with a choice–to trust in love and know God is in control or wallow in self-pity and complain. It’s far from easy but we reassured that God’s promises are true and never waver. For He never changes and remains the same.

The Claw!

“Buzz, what do we do?” Jessie

The Reel

If you haven’t already been to feel the heat–you now do. It’s extremely hot now and your heart begins to race. This is it–the toys are out of options. Right before them is their “pit of hell” and there seems to be no escape. We, as the audience, have little time to come up with any resolution to how they can possibly come out of this alive. Instead of panicking and not giving up on escaping–the toys choose to acknowledge that it’s over. They realize now that love is more important than anything else and begin to take each other hands in one of the most moving, powerful scenes Hollywood has ever dared to attempt (Pixar tends to do this!). One by one they hold hand forming a chain of friendship within this close knit family. Then Buzz offers his hand to Woody. It echoes back to when Woody refused to shake his hand during the breakup at Sunnyside. This time Woody grabs hold of Buzz’s hand and the nine family members are ready to accept their fate and die. This is the end….

As the heart pounding cymbals and percussion grow louder, in an instant we see a bright blue light. We hear a heavenly choir and from above salvation comes in the form in the most unlikely way; yet at the same time fitting way–a claw! The green aliens exclaim, “the claw!!” and we can finally breathe again. The green aliens have repaid their debt to Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head. They express their deepest gratitude for saving them and the everyone breathes a sigh of relief. Their love for each other has saved them. Salvation is found in their darkest hour.

A living death where he’s stripped down from his power and being within shouting distance of the dump. The toys have to get back to Andy quickly and find more unlikely help–from Sid, who is driving a garbage truck. They arrive back at Andy’s, wash up, and quickly race back to his room.

When in the face of death–love is the only thing that makes sense. All our accomplishments, success, job titles, places we’re traveled seem trivial. We want to be surrounded by loved ones…not possessions. Through all the toys had been through in the many years they spend in Andy’s room they formed a family. They fought and had their differences but through it all they formed a special bond with each other. As they faced their impending death, this truth is clearly shown through the brightest. These characters were willing to do anything for each other. We, too, need to grab hold of these truths. To be there for each other as we face our darkest hour. Be willing to make sacrifices for them–even our own life. For there’s no greater love than this, just as we saw Buzz risk his life to save Jessie’s. Is our love for others so strong that we’d put our very life on the line for them? But the story doesn’t end there, we now come to the final farewell scene.

The Toys Are Us

The Reel

The toys are headed off to the attic. Woody’s off to college. Everyone is at peace now with their destination. This could have been the ending. But it wasn’t. Thanks to Woody coming to the realization that he needed to let go of Andy and it was the right thing to do–the toys are going to be donated to Bonnie. We are led to believe that Woody isn’t with them. Andy then hands each toy are carefully to Bonnie with a loving, sentimental sendoff to each toy. He describes each one as he saw them, even if it was contrary to their true identity revealed when they were alive (like Rex). Then Bonnie finds Woody at the bottom of the box and is very hesitant to giving up his best buddy from his childhood. In some ways, Woody subconsciously was a father figure to him. A father he never had. He then lovely tells Bonnie how he saw Woody:

“Now Woody, he’s been my pal for as long as I can remember. He’s brave, like a cowboy should be. And kind, and smart. But the thing that makes Woody special, is he’ll never give up on you… ever. He’ll be there for you, no matter what.”

Woody’s faith in Andy is justified. His loyalty has paid off. The toys get once last playtime with Andy, a playtime they have been craving for years. Andy returns to his car to head off to college. Bonnie waves Woody’s hand and Andy whispers, “Thanks guys.” The camera pans into the sky where our story began. A new journey of friendship with Bonnie has begun. But Andy will always be with Woody and the other toys. Leaving a legacy of love.

The Real

Andy was a special kid who had a very vivid and active imagination. What separated him from most kids, though, was his love for his toys. Although he stopped playing with them as he grew up—he treasured the memories he had with them. But he soon realized he had to move on, let go of them, and place them into new loving hands. If you’re a parent you have and soon will be faced with the day when you’ll have to let go of our child. Into the world on their own. Woody and Andy both came to this realization that even though they weren’t going to be with each other physically; they would carry each other’s love in their heart.

There are so many lessons, valuable truths, and wisdom that we find throughout the Toy Story trilogy. Why do we love these characters so much? Because they’re like us. The toys are us. Although their fears of being replaced, outgrown by a child, and thrown into the trash are part of a unique point of view of a toy; we see ourselves in all of these scenarios too in many ways. That’s why Toy Story is so special to us…because the toys seem so real, so genuine to human nature.

Toy Story addresses the deepest and most profound issues of our existence: identity, purpose, belonging, friendship, love, morality, and death. But above all we find that the key to glory for a toy is love. Love found in the context of friendship. This corresponds to reality for us as Christians too. Love is the reason for our existence. We were made to love and to be loved by God. Just like the toys were made to be loved by a child. We can choose to embrace a world where love doesn’t exist like Lotso; or never give up on love like Woody. This makes all the difference in the end. For with Christ, there are no goodbyes and no closing chapter to the story. God’s story of love has no end and each chapter is greater than the last. Take your place in His story and choose love. For this story goes for “infinity and beyond!”

Clinging to Childhood

The Reel

We are reintroduced to the Toy Story gang in grand style as the opening sequence of Toy Story 3 explodes onto the silver screen. Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Hamm, Mr. Potato Head, Slinky Dog, the green aliens, and Mrs. Potato Head are shown at their best through the eyes of Andy as a child. Through the wild imagination of a child who loved these characters. It’s a bittersweet moment though as we quickly come to realize that much time has passed since then. We watch a flashback sequence of Andy growing up with his favorite toys in the form of a homemade video. The song, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”, brings back memories of what was and then fades quietly into the background. A decade from the events of Toy Story 2 has passed and Andy is all grown up. Time sure does go by fast doesn’t it?…sigh….

Andy is only days away from moving to college and the few remaining toys that are stored in Andy’s room are desperate for his attention. “Operation playtime” is attempted one more time, but to no avail. The green army men, along with Sarge, are going “AWOL” and moving on. Many beloved toys such as Bo Peep, RC, Etch-a-Sketch, and Wheezy have been donated and moved on to different owners. Molly, Andy’s sister, has grown up already too; so the toys are left with few options. It’s either the attic or the dump. Tension and fear begin to rise. Andy then begins sorting through the toys putting them in a trash bag, but when we comes across his last toys—Woody and Buzz—he decides to take Woody to college with him.

For opening Toy Story 3 scene visit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOZqIpbIuUg&feature=related

The Real

It seems silly to most of us that a 17-year old would still have toys stocked away in his room and want to take his favorite toy from his childhood to college with him. If you were like most kids, you grew out of playing toys around middle school(or earlier) as you began you awkward teenage adolescence years. They were thrown away, donated, or tucked away in the attic. But don’t we all struggle with growing up? Letting go of our childhood and becoming an adult? It may be adjusting to moving to a different city after spending your childhood years in the same town. Or seeing our loved ones grow older and more fragile. Witnessing memorable places of our youth torn down, replaced, or abandoned. A friend moving away or saying goodbye to a close family member.

Growing up and becoming an adult is all we wanted when we were younger. We dreamed and imagined a world of infinite possibilities. But as time moved along, reality set in and the life you once envisioned seems like worlds apart from where you’re at. You get your first job. You have bills to pay. Then you get married, have kids, and have less and less time to yourself. Each year goes faster than the last one and you feel like your life is slipping away. When you take a look at your photo albums of years past you can’t help but wish you could return to a life that was simpler, easier, and less complicated. Back to your innocence when the world wasn’t so menacing. On second thought, maybe Andy wasn’t so crazy to hang on to Woody and his toys after all? As the events of Toy Story 3 unfold we come face to face with some of the most difficult issues we’ll ever we faced with. Let’s continue and discover what truths can be uncovered….

The Grass is Greener at Sunnyside

The Reel

“You’ll never be outgrown, or neglected. Never abandoned or forgotten. No owners means – no heartbreak!” Lotso

As Andy is taking the toys to the attic, he is distracted and leaves the garbage bag of toys in the middle of the hallway. Andy’s Mom accidentally mistakes the bag for trash and the toys barely escape for their lives as the garbage truck drives by (the garbage man ironically is Sid!) Woody is the only one is witnesses what really happens, but the rest of the gang have put matters into their own hands–they’re going to donate themselves to Sunnyside Daycare. Woody insists that Andy still cares about them and demands that they stay. Before they can decide, it’s too late and they’ve off to Sunnyside.

Everything appears to be perfect. There’s a whole new group of toys that welcome them in with open arms, they have an entire room to stay at, and there’s always kids in supply to play with them to their delight. Plus, there’s no pain or worries of abandonment because there’s no owners which means no attachments. The kids graduate year after year ensuring a safe environment where heartbreak is no longer necessary. What’s not to like?

Then Woody and the rest of the gang spilt ways in a very messy breakup. The toys are still convinced he’s wrong and they are right. But in an instant their world is turned upside down(in some cases–literally!) These kids become like little raging tornadoes who are a sugar high ripping through the area throwing, breaking, destroying, and smashing everything in sight! It’s reminiscent of a battle scene and the only objective becomes survival. At the end of the day, the toys are beaten up badly and realize their perceived paradise is now a prison. Lotso is nothing more than a bully and manipulator. Buzz is captured and his memory is temporarily erased. They are trapped with no means of escape. Perhaps Andy’s attic wasn’t such a bad place after all. Some changes were never meant for us in the first place….

Isn’t this what we sometimes fall for as well? The easy way out. What’s safe, convenient, and right before us. Settling for mediocrity. Because at least we’ll be able to taste some form of success and personal achievement. As we grow up and changes combat us, we’ve prone to just settle in, throw our hands up, and convince ourselves that it’s all okay. It may be our a job where you know inside and out, where it’s easy, and you’re familiar with. Or living in your hometown where you know everyone’s face and feel safe. Or an old romantic relationship that you know isn’t right for you, but you can’t part ways because you’re comfortable with each other. It’s sticking with what is or finding an alternative route that doesn’t push us beyond what we know of ourselves. We soon discover, though, the grass may be greener on the other side of the fence but the weeds are slowly choking us to death.

It’s only natural to feel uneasy and timid towards new challenges, changes, and circumstances in your life. Change is a natural part of life and no matter how hard we try–it keeps coming back for more. We must remember this–it’s not the changes that define us, but how we react to them. There’s a caution to change though—taking the easy path. Being part of a bad situation and instead of choosing what’s best; taking hold of something that wouldn’t require much of us. God wants us to give us life to the fullest, but often times we aren’t willing to put the hard work and dedication in seeing it through. Or remain loyal despite difficult circumstances like Andy’s toys. As a result, we’re stuck with dead-end jobs, crumbling marriages, dysfunctional churches, dreams left on the table, and thousands of dollars in debt. Here are some practical pointers in choosing what’s best for your life:

Be patient. Learn to wait and not make irrational decisions. Also discover who you are. Take time and get to know your strengths, weaknesses, desires, dreams, spiritual gifts, etc. Pray and seek God’s wisdom. Let God be your guide as you grow in your walk with Him. Listen for His voice. Ask others for advice. Don’t be afraid to take risks. Live a life that requires faith and you will reap the rewards. Finally, choose what’s best. Focus in on God’s absolute best in your life and don’t get dragged down on the “good” things of life. There will be many good opportunities presented to you that aren’t necessarily what God indented for you to have. Live a life of focus that is fixed on God’s purpose for your life. Finally, be the change instead of waiting for the change. Often times we see a situation that needs changed and complain when nothing happens. Take action and change the circumstances. God has placed you where you are currently for a reason–make the most of every opportunity!

“I wish I could always be with you.” Ms. Davis

“You will Mom.” Andy

Through a series of thrilling events, the toys make their way back to Andy’s house in the nick of time (more on this in part 5!) Andy is saying goodbye to his Mom, Molly, and Buster. Woody is set to go to college and still unwilling to let go of Andy. But during this emotional scene, Andy’s Mom says she wishes she could always be with Andy and Andy replies that she will. Woody then realizes the truth of the matter. You can be with someone without being there physically. That letting go of Andy was the right thing to do. Because Andy’s memories of him and the toys will remain with him for the rest of his life. They are a part of him and will be treasured in his heart always. Woody then takes matters in his own hands and the toys head off to be donated to Bonnie.

Then we are summoned into one of the most emotional, tearjerker farewells in cinema history that even makes grown men cry (more on this scene is part 5!) as we witness Andy giving away his toys to Bonnie one by one introducing them to her as he saw them in his imagination. Lastly, he finds Woody at the bottom of the box and Andy is very resistant to give up his most treasured possession of his youth. But he comes to make a very hard decision and lets go of Woody. Then Andy gets one more opportunity to recollect and remember the memories he created with these toys. He plays along with Bonnie with the toys in her front yard. Unrealistic? Perhaps…but it seemed fitting that Andy got a proper goodbye to each of his favorite toys. Finally, it’s time for Andy to head off for college. Bonnie is clutching Buzz and Woody. Woody is seen waving goodbye to him. Andy whispers, “Thanks guys”, and drives off into the distance full of possibilities and potential. He has let go of his past and is about to enter his future. Ready for adulthood and the changes it may bring. The question beckons us: Are we?

The Real

Memories come in all shapes and sizes. Some are sentimental, joyous, and appealing while others are sad, painful, embarrassing filled with mistakes and regrets. But all our memories–the good, bad, and ugly shape who we are today. Without them we have no identity, no foundation–we’re left with nothing more than a name with no meaning, no purpose. We shouldn’t cling to the past, but we shouldn’t run from it either. Our past is given to us to shape us, mold us, and prepare us for what lies ahead. To avoid the mistakes we’ve already made and learn from them. To form our passions, pursuits, and dreams. Teaching us who we are, why we’re here, and what life is all about. But there are times when we are faced with the insurmountable task of letting go…

Letting go of our past is one of the most difficult things we will ever be faced with. Like Andy we will grab hold our most treasured moments till they become larger than life. It may be a possession like in Andy’s case. Or a relationship that is doing us more harm than good. A habit that we haven’t quite grown out of yet, but it’s hindering our growth. The difficult death of a loved one that we never really got over. In order to fully live in the here and now, letting go is the healthy, sensible choice in most cases. This is not to say that you should forget and act as if this possession, person, place, or character trait was never part of you. Just as Andy will carry his Mother’s love, as well as his memories with his toys with him; we too need store the past in our heart.

In conclusion, we’ll be faced with difficult changes that we must adapt to and grow from. Some will be more challenging than others such as moving to a different state, a new job in a big city, or beginning marriage with your spouse. Some changes aren’t necessarily healthy and beneficial to us and may be holding us back from a far greater future God has planned for us. Live a life of focus and choose the God’s best. Lastly, be patient and learn to live in the moment. Embrace the time that has been given to you. Change is inevitable but it’s how we react to change that defines our character. Our future is out there beckoning us forward. Are you ready to take that leap of faith into the great unknown? Only you can decide what to do with the time you’ve been given. Choose wisely.

“Now Woody, he’s been my pal for as long as I can remember. He’s brave, like a cowboy should be, and kind and smart. But the thing that makes Woody special is he’ll never give up on you…ever. He’ll be there for you, no matter what.” Andy

Background Basics: Woody is the main character of the Toy Story trilogy and whose view point we see from all three films. He’s a cowboy doll with a pull-string that has seven individual sayings. He had his own television show from the 1950s called, “Woody’s Roundup.”Today, Woody is recognized and beloved by millions of children around the globe; arguably the most revered toy in existence today.

Nicknames: Sheriff /Sheriff Woody, Cowboy (Buzz)

Classification: Andy’s toy

Hobbies: Playing checkers with Slinky Dog, Holding staff meetings, Being played with by Andy!

Connections to Characters:

Strongest Relationships: Andy, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie

Other: Bo Peep, (love interest), Bullseye, Slinky Dog

Enemies: Buzz Lightyear (1st half of Toy Story), anything/anyone who separates him from Andy

Through Andy’s Eyes: Woody is Andy’s favorite toy growing up since kindergarten. Although Andy gets excited for new toys from time to time(most notably Buzz), he continues to hold on and cherish his Woody doll. For more see below….

Voiced by: Tom Hanks

Personality Profile: Woody is loyal at heart. He’s loyal to his friends and most notably Andy. He battles often with his pride, is a born leader, and is someone who you can count on. He isn’t afraid to let his opinion be known and posses a strong dose of common sense.

Strengths: Woody’s underlining strength is undoubtedly his faith in Andy. Although he wavers at certain points, he never gives up on Andy and will do anything to be there for him. Also Woody is a strong and good friend to the rest of Andy’s toys; willing to put himself in harm’s way for them. He’s a strong leader (as shown in Toy Story), is intelligent, and quick to make decisions.

Weaknesses: Being the main character in which the three films revolves again, Woody is seen to have many flaws. In Toy Story, his pride in who he is in Andy’s eyes, clouds his judgment and he gives in to jealously when Buzz begins to take his place as Andy’s new favorite toy. In Toy Story 2, Woody lets fear of the unknown get in the way of his love and devotion for Andy. His pride once comes into play as well. In Toy Story 3, Woody is unwilling to let go of the past and move on; which leads him to forsake his friends to cling to what once was.

Defining Moments: Each movie in the Toy Story trilogy showcases a defining moment in Woody’s life as Andy grows up. In Toy Story, he must lay down his pride and accept Buzz as a friend. Although when it’s all said and done, Buzz went through a much more significant character development than Woody in the original film. In Toy Story 2, Woody is faced with a much larger and more challenging dilemma that runs its course through the third film–Andy growing up. When his arm is torn, he realizes that toys weren’t made to last forever. After being kidnapped, he is given a chance to abandon his calling as Andy’s toy, and instead embrace the easy life of immorality. No more hurt, pain, or heartbreak. The catch is that he’ll never experience love again. After Jessie reveals her tragic tale of being abandoned, Woody initially decides to go with Stinky Pete, Jessie, and Bullseye to Japan. When Buzz and the gang find him later on, he still is stubborn and wouldn’t change his mind. But after seeing a television clip of a Woody doll being loved by a child, he is reminded of what being loved by a child is all about and his loyalty to Andy is renewed. In Toy Story 3, ten years have passed and Andy is going to college. Woody is determined to stick with Andy no matter what, despite the unwelcoming circumstances. Andy chooses to take Woody to college and after a mix-up, Andy’s toys end up nearly thrown away. When the toys decide to donate themselves to Sunnyside Daycare, Woody refuses to let go of Andy and instead abandons them to head back home. After the long and epic struggle to get back home, he initially chooses to go with Andy to college before he realizes that the most loving thing he can do is let him go. Andy comes to this realization as well and gives Andy to Bonnie, very reluctantly. Much more of Woody’s character development will be discussed in the upcoming Real of the Reel blogs–stay tuned!!

“You actually think you’re the Buzz Lightyear? Hey, look, everybody! It’s the real Buzz Lightyear!”

“So long… partner.” Woody’s parting words to Andy

Woody’s full name is Woody Pride. His last name is never revealed in the three films. Lee Unkrich, the director of Toy Story 3, made this known in his Twitter account.

Woody appears in A Bug’s Life in the bloopers and Cars as a woody wagon during the end credits.

Jim Hanks, the brother of Tom Hanks, voices most of the Woody toys, Woody in the video games, and also in the Toy Story shorts.

Woody is based on John Lassester’s Casper doll, as well as the Howdy Doody puppets from the 1950s.

Woody is the only one of Andy’s toys (or any toy in Toy Story) to “come alive” while in the presence of a human.

Woody has 229 animation points of movement in his face.

Tom Hanks was attracted to the voice of Woody because he often would wonder as a child if his toys were alive and moved around when nobody was in his room.

Woody was originally going to have a much more distasteful personality before the script was altered. After a Black Friday viewing and a near cancellation of Toy Story, Woody was given a much more likeable character. Thanks to the changes, Toy Story became a huge success and Woody become one of the most beloved characters in cinema history.

Woody’s physical features: he stands 15.18 inches tall, his plastic components are made out of vinyl polymer, his cloth components are made out of dyed fabric, and denim for his jeans.

Purpose and Belonging: Part 3 of 5 (Toy Story)

A Bond Begins to Break

The Reel

As we begin a new chapter in the story of Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang in Toy Story 2; there’s much familiarity to our surroundings. Andy is a young kid you loves his toys and has an active imagination. Woody is still his favorite toy. And Buzz and Woody are still best friends. There are also a few notable differences: Andy has a dog named Buster and Mrs. Potato Head is now part of the Andy’s toys. It’s summer time and Andy is just about ready to head off for an exciting week at cowboy camp. This is the highlight of Woody’s year. A time where it’s just him and Andy. Then in the blink of an eye, everything changes when Andy accidentally tears Woody’s arm while playing with him. Andy is devastated and saddened by the reality all kids come to know—toys aren’t made to last forever. Woody is equally troubled and depressed that he isn’t going to cowboy camp. Instead he’s left on a dusty shelf in a place where no toy wants to end up at. It’s from these events that the meaningful and monumental messages of Toy Story 2 begin to unfold.

The Real

As Woody and Andy both came to understood through the events of Toy Story 2, toys aren’t made to last forever. What can we take away from this? First, everything that comes into our possession is a gift and needs to be taken care of. We are called to be faithful stewards to what God blesses us with. And let us not forget that nothing in the physical realm lasts forever here on earth. Things rust, collect dust, break, crumble, and disintegrate. Even our physical bodies themselves will eventually break down and fad within time. But there is hope. Unlike toys, we were made to last forever. Although we all must face the fierce power of death, we do not need to be afraid. Christ has conquered the grave and all who put their faith in Him have the promise and assurance of eternal life spent with Him. In Heaven, everything will be put back into the original design, creation will thrive, and the fear of loss will be nothing more than a fading memory!

The Ache of Abandonment

The Reel

“Let me guess. Andy’s a real special kid, and to him, you’re his buddy, his best friend, and when Andy plays with you it’s like… even though you’re not moving, you feel like you’re alive, because that’s how he sees you.”

Through a shocking series of events, Woody ends up in the clutches of a greedy toy collector named, Al. Miles from home, Woody is desperate to get back to Andy where is safe and loved. There we meet the Roundup Gang made up of Jessie, Bullseye, and Stinky Pete who have been anxiously awaiting his arrival. He is the missing piece to their immorality. Once Woody reveals he still has an owner, Jessie’s demeanor towards Woody begins to change. She is bitter, angry, and sarcastic at the thought that Andy still loves Woody. When Woody’s arm completely is detached from his body; he is forced to stay for the little longer. The next day, he is fixed up and made new again without a single blemish. Just before he is set to leave, Jessie reveals her heartbreaking story of being abandoned by her owner, Emily. She has completely lost faith in being loved by a child and states: “You never forget kids like Emily, or Andy, but they forget you.”

The Real

Just like a toy, we were made to be used, cherished, and loved. We come fully alive only when we are centered in God’s will for our lives. We were created to enjoy God just like a toy is created to enjoy a child’s attention, love, care, and devotion. What keeps us from enjoying God’s love? Fear and a lack of trust in who He is. We’re afraid of being abandoned because of our failures and faults. Unlike kids such as Andy and Emily, God doesn’t outgrow us. He doesn’t change. He’s forever the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. And His love for us is unconditional and not dependent on what we do or who we are. His promises stand upright that He will never leave us or abandon us. We wouldn’t be thrown to the curb because God doesn’t want us anymore. We were made for God and for His purposes. We belong to Him and Him alone. Take hold of these incredible truths and take delight in His love for you!

The Illusion of Immorality

The Reel

Now, it is Woody who is faced with the same reality. Andy is growing up and he can’t do anything about it. Jessie’s sad story is a painting a picture of what he’ll soon face in his own life. This is the fate of every toy. As he looks into the dark and unknown future that may lie ahead, he makes a choice: he’s staying with the Roundup Gang. The fear proves to be far too great for Woody to face and the illusion of immorality is there for the taking. He convinces himself that being “loved” by children behind glass in a museum in Tokyo is better than the real thing. No more attachment, no more pain, no more worries. Living forever with no love. Isn’t this a fear we all face with in our lives as well?

The Real

Love isn’t safe. It involves risks and for it to be worthwhile it goes beyond logical explanation. It’s just plain crazy. Woody saw an escape to his problems, a false promise of life with no worries, no fear, and no risk. His future would be mapped out–spending eternity in a safe, comfortable environment away from the cares and concerns that came with a toy’s world. We, too, are faced with this dilemma. Here on earth, we have a choice. To live for ourselves, in our comfort zones, is very tempting proposition. Relationships carry a great weight. The weight of responsibility, of trust, and the gift of ourselves. Love carries a great price. And we all are faced with the decision: to choose love and what isn’t safe, or choose what is safe for all of eternity. The illusion of Hell is that the immorality offered there is a paradise without worries, a care-free environment where the pain and risk of love isn’t a burden to bear; a false allure of what love should be. Of course, in reality Hell is exactly this, only it wouldn’t bring us what he crave. Instead we’ll be in torment and misery for the false hope that we thought we would attain. Many live lives of Hell here on earth convinced they are in Heaven. To them living for themselves is far better than the promises found in pursuit of love. The truth of our being, our existence, or purpose: we are made for love, by love, to love, and to be loved.

A Toy’s Truth Taught

The Reel

“Fair? I’ll tell you what’s not fair: Spending a lifetime on a dime-store shelf watching every other toy be sold! Well, finally my waiting has paid off, and no hand-me-down cowboy doll is gonna mess it up for me now!”

“You’re right, Prospector. I can’t stop Andy from growing up… but I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Meanwhile Buzz, Slinky, Mr. Potato Head, Rex, and Hamm are on a daring mission to save Woody from Al. On the morning of their departure to Japan, they cross paths, but Woody is stubborn. He’s willing to leave his friends, along with Andy, behind for the sake of his new found pride in what he once was. He once was a larger than life toy that was beloved and treasured by children. He had a whole range of collectibles devoted to him, was on Time Magazine, and had his own television show. As Buzz and the others sadly depart, Woody sees a television clip of Woody doll being held by a child. The song, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” plays and the truth finally sinks in. To be loved by a child for awhile, is better than not being loved at all. Love is worth it. But before he can make his escape, Stinky Pete reveals who he really is. He will stop at nothing to ensure that Woody, Jessie, Bullseye, and himself are going to Japan. He has accepted embraced the lie of immortality and wants his claim to fame. They all end up at the Tri-County Airport and Stinky Pete is forced to become a “man doll” for a young girl named Amy. Jessie and Woody barely avoid a one way ticket to Japan, and the gang get back to Andy’s house in the nick of time. Woody’s arm is repaired by Andy (have being torn again by Stinky Pete) and Woody learns a valuable lesson. Stinky Pete does not. The question we are faced with is: Which toy are we as walk through this life?

The Real

To Stinky Pete, being loved by a child has worse than death. He wanted no part of it. Thus when he was forced to part ways with Amy, it was a cruel punishment and a “living Hell”. Woody, on the other hand, had experienced what it meant to be loved by a child, was tempted to jump ship, and then saw the truth of why a toy was made in the first place. To be loved by a child. For the profound purpose of playtime. Toys were not meant to be put on display and viewed from the other side of the glass. They were made for children, to be cared for, for memories, and to being a child’s imagination to life. We, too, are faced with the choice: to be like Stinky Pete and choose the false hope of immorality free from the cares and concerns of this world or be like Woody and choose love that’s full of risks and uncertainty. That’s the reason why people choose to go to Hell. Because to them going to Heaven would be worse than Hell, being forced to love God and other people when they’d rather worship themselves. Love that’s forced, isn’t love. It’s manipulation. Love is a choice and is God’s greatest gift. God is the essence of love and is entity of love. But love isn’t safe. It requires faith, trust, and the willingness to give one’s self for another. Love requires nothing in return. There’s nothing more we need more than love. We are wired for it and without it we’ll live a false existence of what reality is all about. Our purpose is found in love. We are found in love and belong in His arms. Every day we come across a choice: To live for ourselves or for God and others. May we follow Woody’s example. An example of loyalty, devotion, friendship, and love. Because our finest hour is not found in our accomplishments, our possessions, or our earthly fame: it’s found in love. To be loved and to love. Because love is made to last forever!

“And this is Buzz Lightyear, the coolest toy ever! Look! He can fly, oh, and shoot lasers! He’s sworn to protect the galaxy from the Evil Emperor Zurg!” Andy

Background Basics: Buzz Lightyear is a main character of the Toy Story trilogy and is the co-leader of Andy’s toys. He is a space ranger action figure who believes he is a real space ranger in some fashion/form in all three films.

Nicknames: Astronut (Hamm), Lightbeer/Lightsnack (Woody) Lightweight (Stinky Pete)

Classification: Andy’s toy

Hobbies: Acting like he’s a real Space Ranger (he tends to do this often!), shooting lasers (or a blinking light bulb!), flying (aka falling with style), battling the evil Emperor Zerg, Salsa dancing (Spanish Buzz!)

Connections to Characters:

Strongest Relationships: Woody (best friend), Jessie (love interest), Andy

Other: Rex, Mr. Potato Head, Mrs. Potato Head, Slinky Dog, Hamm

Enemies: Emperor Zerg!, Woody (first half of Toy Story)

Through Andy’s Eyes: Buzz is every young boy’s fantasy for a toy with all the gadgets and cool features. When Andy receives him for his birthday present, Buzz overtakes Woody as his favorite toy. Through losing both Buzz and Woody, Andy appreciates both and gives them more equal standing. Woody remains his favorite, beloved toy when it’s all said and done, but Buzz holds a special place in Andy’s heart as well.

Voiced by: Tim Allen, Javier Fernandez-Pena (Spanish Mode Buzz)

Personality Profile: Buzz Lightyear is revealed to have many sides and aspects to his personality throughout the Toy Story trilogy. In Toy Story he is delusional, arrogant, and very self-serving when we first meet him. Through his time spent with Woody at Sid’s house, the truth is revealed and he accepts reality and turns into a selfless friend to Woody. In Toy Story 2, Buzz is even keeled throughout willing to go the extra mile (literally and figuratively) to help save Woody. The Al’s Toy Barn Buzz resembles the real Buzz’s personality from the first film. In Toy Story 3, we see 3 different sides to Buzz–the level headed and sane Buzz, the demo mode Buzz who again mirrors the Space Ranger mentality, and the Spanish mode Buzz who obviously speaks Spanish and is a romantic at heart.

Strengths: Buzz is a complex character who has a vast amount of strengths. First, of course, he has many gadgets and useful features he can use at his disposal. Although he can’t shoot lasers or fly he is the envy of every toy because of what he posses. He is very passionate in natural about his causes whether it be being a Space Ranger, helping his friends, or being there for Andy. Buzz is also a natural born leader, although this sometimes creates conflict with Woody.

Weaknesses: The obvious weakness of Buzz is his arrogance in his abilities and his features that he possesses. His pride often clouds his judgment on the true nature of reality (mostly seen in Toy Story). He’s also prone not to listen to his peers (in this case, toys) when they offer advice.

Defining Moments: In Toy Story, Buzz is lead to believe that he is a real Space Ranger and refuses to accept his true identity as a toy. Despite Woody constantly telling him so and all the evidence right before his eyes; he is blind to the truth. When he and Woody are separated in Sid’s house, he sees a commercial of Buzz Lightyear toys and now the reality of the situation begins to set in. Stubborn and in self-denial, he tries to fly out the window, but falls and his left arm detaches. When Buzz is strapped to a rocket, Woody finally helps him see the significance of what a toy is all about. From that point on, Buzz accepts who he is and begins to carry out his unique purpose as a good friend to the other toys and being loyal to Andy. His faith in his true self is then shown most vividly when he “falls with style” to Andy’s car at the end of the movie.

In Toy Story 3, Buzz goes through a few character changes along the way and it is revealed early on that he has hidden feelings for Jessie. He hasn’t gotten the courage to take the next step. Once his Spanish mode is activated, Buzz turns into a love stricken romantic and let’s his affection for Jessie be known through salsa dancing (albeit goofy!) They eventually end up in the garbage truck and Jessie is stuck under garbage. He selflessly rescues her at the risk of his own life and throws her out of harm’s way before a television comes crashing on top of him. Woody and the others pull him out and he is revived to his old self again after Jessie believes him to be “dead.” Later on, Jessie and Buzz hold hands as they await their impending doom in the incinerator and after they at of harm’s way as well. Although he seems to have no memory of his two unique personalities beforehand, he is no longer timid in letting his true feelings for Jessie be known. They are last seen salsa dancing putting a finishing touch to the Toy Story trilogy!

Memorable Quotes:

“To infinity and beyond!” Buzz’s catchphrase and the Toy Story’s most memorable quote

“¡El Vaquero! (The cowboy!)” “Senorita! Senorita, donde estas?! (Miss! Miss, where are you?)” Spanish Buzz

“I am Buzz Lightyear. I come in peace.”

“Well, no, actually, I’m stationed up in the Gamma Quadrant of Sector Four. As a member of the elite Universe Protection Unit of the Space Ranger Corps, I protect the galaxy from the threat of invasion from the Evil Emperor Zurg, sworn enemy of the Galactic Alliance.”

“Come on, Sheriff. There’s a kid over in that house who needs us. Now let’s get you out of this thing.”

“This isn’t flying. This is falling, with style!”

“The air isn’t toxic. How dare you open a spaceman’s helmet on a uncharted planet! My eyeballs could have been socked from their sockets!”

Buzz: “I just want you to know that even though you tried to terminate me, revenge is not an idea we promote on my planet.”
Woody: “Oh, oh that’s good.”
Buzz: “But we’re not on my planet, ARE we?”

Buzz: “Right now, poised the edge of the galaxy. Emperor Zurg has been secretly building a weapon with the destructive capacity to annihilate an entire planet. I alone have information that reveals it weapon’s only weakness. And you my friend are responsible for delaying my rendezvous with Star Command!”
Woody: “YOU ARE A TOY!! You’re not the real Buzz Lightyear; you’re…oh, you’re an action figure! You are a child’s plaything!”
Buzz: “You are a sad strange little man, and you have my pity. Farewell.”
Woody: “Oh, yeah? Well, good riddance, ya loony!”

“Don’t worry, Woody. In just a few hours you’ll be sitting around a campfire with Andy making delicious hot schmoes.’”

“Has your mind been melded? You could have killed me, Space Ranger! Or should I say traitor?” “Don’t let this impostor fool you! He’s been trained by Zurg himself to mimic my every move.” Al’s Toy Barn Buzz, Toy Story 2

“Woody you’re not a collector’s item; you’re a child’s plaything. You are A TOY!”

“To do what, Woody? Watch kids from behind glass and never be loved again? Some life.”

“Uh, ma’am? I, uh, um, well, I just wanted to say you’re a bright young woman with a beautiful yarn full of hair. A hair full of yarn. It’s ah… um… I must go.” Buzz talking to Jessie

“Yes, sir, Well-Groomed Man!” Buzz to Ken

Fun Facts:

Buzz makes a cameo in the Pixar film, Finding Nemo, as a toy in the dentist’s waiting room.

Also in the Pixar film, Cars, the Lightyear Blimp is a reference to Buzz and a parody of the Goodyear Blimp. Another reference to Buzz is the Piston Cup racer’s tires which are branded, “Lightyear” which as is another parody to Goodyear as well.

Buzz makes a few references to Star Trek in the Toy Story films. He remarks: “There seems to be no sign of intelligent life anywhere…” which is a direct quote from Admiral James T. Kirk in the film Star Trek (1966). Also he does a Vulcan salute when he says “Farewell” to Woody at the gas station and to the 2nd Buzz playing catch with Emperor Zerg.

Buzz’s fictional home planet is Morph.

Billy Crystal, Bill Murray, and Jim Carrey were all considered for the voicing role of Buzz Lightyear. I think Pixar made the right decision with Tim Allen…wouldn’t you agree?!

The toy line of Buzz Lightyear was based on the G.I. Joe toys from the 1960s.

The catchphrase of “To infinity and beyond!” was said by Flik in the outtakes of A Bug’s Life and by Tim Allen’s character in Shaggy Dog.

The original script for Toy Story 3 had Buzz and his entire toy line recalled back to Taiwan (where the Buzz Lightyear toys are made) due to a defect. Apparently, that defect could have explained why Buzz and his toy line believed themselves to be real space rangers. While this plot idea was ultimately scrapped, the final script did still include an explanation as to why the entire toy line had at the very least initial delusional beliefs to being the real Buzz Lightyear (as apparently they are pre-set to Demo Mode when first made).

Buzz has the following features: Wrist Laser, Pop Out Wings, Retractable Helmet, Flip out wrist communicator, Joints, Karate Chop Action
